If you are looking for ways to lower your bills and free up some room in your budget, you may be missing a key place to cut costs. If you live in a region with seasons of cold temperatures, you may be spending more money to heat your home than you need to be!
Heating your home is a full-time job in the winter months that is completely necessary, but there are definitely some tricks to help keep those costs as low as possible. Making some changes to create a heating efficient home can save you anywhere from 5-30% on your heating bill.
Over the course of a winter season (especially if you are in Wisconsin, like me!), these savings can really add up!
7 Ways to Save Money Heating Your Home:
1. Lower your thermostat to 55 degrees.
When you are not home and your furnace is running, it is using energy for no purpose. It is running constantly to maintain a higher temperature.
If you turn it way down while you are gone for the day and/or overnight when you are already under covers, you will save so much energy because your furnace won’t be running. This means you will save tons of money!
Will your house be freezing when you wake up and when you come home from work? Yes, but you can easily warm it up with your hard-working furnace and be comfy in no time!
2. Put on some layers.
Your home does not need to be so warm you can walk around in your underwear. If you are looking to cut down on energy costs, turn down the thermostat and bundle up in some layers.
This is one of the cheapest ways to stay warm in lieu of using your furnace for heating. We pretty much live in sweats in our home because we keep it so cold. It isn’t painful and it saves us money!
3. Prioritize the rooms you heat.
Just in case you didn’t know this, you don’t HAVE to heat every room in your home. I was unaware of this for a while in my adult life.
You can turn off the ductwork to certain parts of your home, close the vents and only focus on heating rooms you are actually using. If you are heating unused rooms, you are just wasting money! Instead, prioritize heating the rooms you actually need to be warm and forget the rest.
4. Maintain your furnace and keep it clean.
If you want a machine to run smoothly and efficiently, you need to perform regular maintenance on it. Your furnace should be kept clean, filters changed regularly and have regular maintenance checks performed. This will ensure it is functioning properly and as efficiently as possible.
Don’t worry, the cost to maintain it is nothing compared to the money you will save by having an efficient unit.
5. Close your flue.
If you have a chimney, make sure you close the flue when you aren’t using it. The flue allows gas and smoke to escape and not fill your home, but it also can act as a vacuum to suck out all your warm air.
Having your flue open is like trying to heat the entire outside with your single furnace. So silly! Don’t waste your money letting all your warm are outside. Close your chimney flue when you aren’t using it.
6. Check your windows.
Sunshine isn’t all that warm in the winter months. Instead what you will find coming through your windows is natural light with a whole lot of drafty cold. Your windows can end up feeling like someone has a door open somewhere.
Instead, keep your blinds and curtains closed to help insulate your home. There is a huge difference to having bare windows with winter winds beating against them versus a window covered with heavy curtains that a stop the cold from coming in.
Keep your windows covered to keep your home warmer to save you money!
7. Reverse your ceiling fans.
Sounds counterintuitive right? Who uses a fan in the winter? Well, fans were designed to bring hot air up to the ceiling when they turn normally and bring hot air down to the floor when they run in reverse.
Did I just blow your mind? I didn’t learn this until a few years ago and I didn’t believe it until recently. It works.
