Paying off debt can be super exciting for a hot minute, but very quickly, frustration and lack of motivation can set in. This can totally derail your debt payoff if you let it.
I get it! It’s not that you don’t want to get out of debt, it’s just a frustrating process. You work really hard for your money, you put all of it toward debt and you live like you are broke. It is tiresome.
We are all human and feel like we just need a break, or need to have some fun for the weekend or just want to splurge on one item for ourselves. The problem is, when you do one of those things and ease up on your debt payoff, you head down a slippery slope.
Next thing you know, you are not paying off any debt, feeling guilty about what you’ve done and feel like getting back on track is impossible.
Instead of going through all of that, there are three things you can do to help stay motivated during debt payoff. You are still going to have to work on your own willpower, but these tips should help make that easier for you!
Three tips to stay motivated during debt payoff:
First, talk about your debt payoff….A LOT. The more you talk about it, the more normal it will become. If it is always present in your thoughts, you are going to constantly be aware of what you are trying to do with your finances.
Talking about your debt payoff makes it a front and center focus to your life. It will be harder to swing through the drive-through on the way home from work when you have been talking about paying off your debt.
The more you talk about it, you will find certain people are super supportive and others think you are crazy. Keep talking to the supportive people about it and stop talking about it to the people who just don’t get it. All you need in your life right now is encouragement and positivity surrounding your debt payoff.
Pro-tip: Don’t become obsessive about it where it is all you think about and it keeps you up at night. You will burn yourself out with that. Just keep it in mind when you are making purchase decisions. Talk about how awesome it will be to be debt free to keep you motivated.
Second, keep it visual. Use a visual countdown for your debt payoff so you see your progress every day. It is so important to remember how far you have come and where you are going. If you keep your head down and just pay off debt, but don’t track it, you will get lost in the process.
I love our tracking sheets because you get to color! Every little bit that gets paid off means you get to color in the thermometer that much more. It is such a rewarding process.
The debt countdown coloring sheet can be posted anywhere in your home as a daily reminder of where you are.

By keeping it visual, you are motivating yourself without even realizing it. Your brain will process your surroundings whether you are focused on them or not. Just having the countdown tracker will keep your debt payoff plan in your subconscious, which will then impact your daily decisions.
It’s completely effortless and super effective. What could be better than that?!
Third, keep your dreams in focus. Why are you putting yourself through the sometimes agonizing process of becoming debt free? There has to be a reason you have chosen to live like a broke person to get out of debt. What is it?
If you have dreams of traveling the world, giving more generously than you had ever imagined, retiring a millionaire or giving your children everything you never had, remember that! Debt payoff is really challenging at times so you need to keep your dreams in focus.
Remind yourself why you have chosen to do this. Keeping your reason in front of you will help you overcome any excuse you could come up with to derail yourself.
To keep your dreams in the forefront you need to write them down. If you are creative/crafty, you can throw together a vision board of all the things you will do when you are debt free. Or, you can simply write them down and keep the paper posted in a high traffic area.
You always need to remember why you are doing this.
